Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast to near normal shape, appearance and size following mastectomy.
Although breast reconstruction can rebuild your breast, the results are highly variable:
A reconstructed breast will not have the same sensation and feel as the breast it replaces.
Visible incision lines will always be present on the breast, whether from reconstruction or mastectomy.
Certain surgical techniques will leave incision lines at the donor site, commonly located in less exposed areas of the body such as the back, abdomen or buttocks.
A note about symmetry:
If only one breast is affected, it alone may be reconstructed. In addition, a breast lift, breast reduction or breast augmentation may be recommended for the opposite breast to improve symmetry of the size and position of both breasts.
Your Personal Consultation
During the consultation, you will be asked about your desired breast shape and size. Dr. Boss will discuss with you how your nipples and areolas will be repositioned. You should mention anything else about your breasts that you would like to see improved. This will help him to understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved.
Your Surgical Experience
The goal of Dr. Boss and the entire staff is to make your surgical experience as easy and comfortable for you as possible.
You will return to Dr. Boss for follow-up care at prescribed intervals, at which time your progress will be evaluated. Once the immediate postoperative follow-up is complete, many surgeons encourage their patients to come back for periodic checkups to observe and discuss the long-term results of surgery.
Please remember that the relationship with Dr. Boss does not end when you leave the operating room.
If you have questions or concerns during your recovery, or need additional information at a later time, you should contact him.
Fortunately, significant complications from breast reconstruction are infrequent. Every year, many thousands of women undergo successful breast reconstruction surgery, experience no major problems and are pleased with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and risks.
